Local radio used to have a weekly contest called "Battle of the Sexes".
Listening on that day, two contestants went to war trying to see who could name more flowers.
The 'guy' jumped out with an impressive lead by blurting out "Rose".
She followed up with daisy.
The guy only paused for a few seconds before recovering with "carnations" (you could hear him muttering out the annual holidays in hopes of staying in the game).
She, without a second thought, said daffodil.
The guy, now getting nervous, and after a concerning delay, managed "lily" (with a sigh of relief).
She without delay countered with hyacinth.
You could hear the sweat rolling down his forehead as he started to suffer 'brain freeze'. Eventually he recovered with "orchid".
And off she went again, knocking out 'snapdragon'.
And then there was silence, and more silence. He died right there on the vine.
The guy, now defeated, but for the victory, the DJ required that she come up with at least two more flowers.
And with the grace of womanly connectivity to the world around her, she just started blurting out flower after flower after flower; tulips, crocus, sunflowers, peonies, chrysanthemums, and hydrangeas.
Laughing out loud, the radio DJ said, "is that all you've got?"
So, with her natural elegance, she paused for a minute and then buried him as well with: "delphiniums, gladiolus, irises, lavender, poppies, sweet peas, baby’s breath, amaryllis, proteas, camellias, dahlias, stock, lisianthus, cosmos, zinnias, bluebells, jasmine, magnolias, marigolds, heather, asters, birds of paradise, stephanotis, waxflowers, scabiosa, verbena, and hibiscus.
Then she asked, "would you like me to go on"?
"Crickets" on the other end.
Nature is complicated, but for those that choose to embrace it, it's an amazing gift.
